It also serves well <br />as a focus of study on issues which impact one of Minnesota's important <br />resources. <br />Pelican river ~hlatershed District was created in 1965 to protect the <br />water quality of one of the most important chains of recreational lakes in <br />Minnesota. <br />The 2000 MA~I~D Summer Tour will kick-of3F on Thursday evening with <br />registration and a beach style welcome Party begmnin~* at 6:00 p.m. at the <br />Holiday lnn Lakeside. <br />The Tour begins at 11:30 a.m. on Friday morning with an"introduction to <br />the Pr~ID. ]Extraordinarily comfortable tour busses will depart from the <br />Holiday lnn Lakeside at 9:30 a.m. The Friday tour will focus on <br />programs and projects dealing with various aspects of ialce quality <br />protection and enhancement. There will be stops at Lake St Clair, site <br />of a whole-lake alum treatment; Muskrat Lake where the District is <br />attempting to reduce phosphorus exports by altering the lake's fish <br />population; a wetland site where aeration is being used to decrease <br />discharges of nutrients, and several other locations. <br />A picnic lunch will be held at Dunton Locks, site of one of the state's most <br />important walleye hatcheries. <br />Guest speaker at the Friday evening Four banquet will be Don l-~ultman, <br />a tJ.S. Fish and ~Iildlife Service regional refuge Supervisor for stations <br />located in Minnesota, I~lonthern lows, and ~Iestern Wisconsin. <br />Saturday morning activities include a demonstration of a water quality <br />program put together by Detroit Lakes 4th graders, and sessions on the <br />District's new Stormwater Utility, setting up water quality monitoring <br />facilities, and the District's current research project regarding phosphorus <br />reduction in wetland complexes through aeration. <br />Spouses will be kept busy too. We have arranged for an excursion to the <br />Shooting Star Casino, and have set up visits at several other local <br />attractions. There are plenty. of nearby opportunities for golfing, boating, <br />fishing, walking, .bicycling, tennis, or if all fails there is a nice beach for <br />sitting, sunning and enjoying the scenery. <br />So please join the Pelican River.
