Are you excited for summer? My friends and I are very excited for
summer. It's our favorite time of the year. We do have one problem that you could maybe help
us with. We don't like it when a lot of leaves and grass clippings get into our water. Do you
think you can help us make sure that these things stay out of our home? I bet you can.
Thanks for helping, ~^.~
Watershed Wally `~ ~'
3
\ ,~
elp Deep Leaves and Grass Clippings Ont of y's ® e: ~ ~
~i~,~ - .
• Clean leaves and grass clippings off of sidewalks and have your parents clean leaves off
of the streets and gutters.
• If your parents rake leaves help them do it.
• Have your parents help you make a compost pile to put the leaves and clippings in.
Yon C so Help y y Conserv° ~ Lner~y:
• Shut the lights off when no one is in the room.
• Decide what you want from the refrigerator before you open the door, instead of €~ ~ ~ '" ~
Ieavin the door o en while ou're lookin ~ ~~z~
g P Y g ~~ ~' Y<~
• Turn the television off and play outside or play a board game instead. ~ ~, ~ ~ ,~
~._
i~hy o the leaves brass clippings hart y's fish friends?
hen the leaves and grass clippings wash into the water from places, like storm drains, in the fall they sink to
the bottom of the water. At the bottom they start to decay. When this happens a lot of nutrients are
released into the water. These nutrients make the algae grow too fast. The algae is what turns the lakes green in
the summer. When that happens the algae use too much oxygen and the fish don't get enough so they can't
breath. Sometimes they even die.
Clean water is important for you, too. Not only do you need clean water to drink, but to swim in also. Swimming
in the lakes when they are green isn't as much fun as when they're clean.
ti ,~
~0~~4
} J
~ ~ \_
i
~~ ~~~ ~~
~;,
Word On The Watershed -Page 3-
