There,
as a surgeon, he became Chief of
Staff, as well as a Clinical Professor at
the University of Minnesota Medical
School. His specialty was abdominal
surgery with an emphasis on cancer-
ous conditions. Dan was regarded as
a wonderful teacher to nurses and the
medical staff atAbbott-Northwestern
and served on the Board of Directors
to the hospital. He always had time
for a quiet talk with patients and staff
and was admired by many
As a doctor, Dan understood the
importance of training students in
the environmental sciences. In 1982,
he endowed a program for the Fresh-
water Foundation at the University of
Minnesota's Gray Freshwater Biolog-
ical Institute. Well-funded with
$500,000.00, the program brought in
renowned scientists with interests in
freshwater resources from around the
globe. These specialists spent several
summers at the institute sharing their
knowledge with advanced students
and scientists. Dan's first cousin, Dr
Malcolm Moos, was President of the
University of Minnesota at the time
the Gray Freshwater Biological Insti-
tute was conceived by the Freshwater
Foundation, and Dan became very fa-
miliar with the goals and work of the
Freshwater Society_
The "Moos Summer Program"
experienced a hiatus when the Uni-
versity of Minnesota returned the in-
stitute to the Freshwater Society. The
Society is pleased to announce the
continuation of this endowment in
the summer of 2003. This important
program is being restructured and
will become an environmental learn-
ing curriculum for teachers at all Iev-
els of education. A Teacher's AIliance
has been formed, consisting of the
Science Museum of Minnesota, Wolf
Ridge Environmental Learning Cen-
ter, University of Minnesota's College
of Biological Sciences, and the Fresh-
water Society. A weekend retreat at
Wolf Ridge ELC in Finland, Minneso-
ta, was held May 3-4, to formulate the
details of the joint efforts. The first
results will be a limited Teacher's Al-
liance program this summer. The
program will focus on educating
teachers on environmental principles.
The teacher's will be given the tools
to pass the knowledge on to their stu-
dents, whatever their subject or grade
level.
We are certain Dan would ap-
prove of the new Teacher's Alliance,
as has his son, Charles Moos. Charles
was a valuable member of the Board
of Directors of the Freshwater Foun-
dation for 18 years. Both Dan and
Charles Moos have made their mark
on the world of freshwater and the
cause to keep our waters usable.
FACETS Spring 2003
Leaders of the joint efforts "Teacher Alliance' program include: (left to right) Dr. Robert Elde (Dean, College of Biological Sci-
ences, U of MN); Dr. Richard Caldecott (Freshwater Society); Dave Chittenden (Science Museum); Dr. Gary Deason (CEO, Wolf
Ridge Environmental Learning Center); Jim Hansen ice Chairman, Freshwater Society); Richard Gray (Founder, Freshwater So-
ciety); Dr Jim Peterson (CEO, Science Museum); and.
