It was late <br />afternoon of August 1C <br />2004, and the weather <br />was ideal for a dinner <br />cruise on the <br />Mississippi River <br />downstream from <br />St. Paul, <br />Minnesota. <br />Before <br />shoving off for the <br />evening, guest of <br />honor U.S. Senator <br />Norm Coleman <br />was introduced to <br />the crowd by <br />x <br />i <br />F <br />Commissioner Sheryl <br />Corrigan of the <br />Minnesota Pollution <br />Control Agency. Sena <br />Coleman, former may <br />St. Paul, stressed the <br />importance of water a <br />most critical resource, <br />the Mississippi River <br />Stream and Main Stre_ <br />Mississippi's watershed includes <br />drainage from 37 of the 50 states and it's <br />channel north to south separates the <br />East from the West. The Mississippi <br />originates in northern Minnesota and <br />about half of its total length is within <br />the state. <br />Minnesota's slogan is "The Land of <br />10,000 Lakes", but actually there are 15, <br />2911akes, defined as "an open body of <br />water at least 14 acres in size". Most <br />don't know that Minnesota is also home <br />to 6,564 rivers, with combined lengths <br />of about 92,000 miles.
