Jirre Anderson (Water Resources Center <br />and Soil; Water; and Climate) received two <br />grants, one from the Metropolit~m Council <br />of the Twin Cities and one from the <br />Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, for a <br />project titled ``Assessment of Stonnwater <br />Treatment Practices on the Quantity and <br />Quality on Runoff." <br />Hill Arnold (Civil Engineering) <br />presented research sponsored by the <br />Water Resources Center at the American <br />Chemical Society meeting held Auguust <br />28-September 1; 200. The title of the <br />research is "Methanotrophicbaeterial <br />populations in constructed wetland <br />sediments." <br />)gill Arnold was promoted from Assistant <br />Professor to Associate Professor of Civil <br />Engineering. <br />Dr'iss ~+ nnaaraay (Water Resources <br />Science) presented a poster titled <br />"Modeling Hydrologic Response of <br />Converting Amlual Crops to Agroforestry <br />and Other Perernial Cropping Systems: <br />An assessment of SWAT and I~ISPF <br />capabilities" at the 9th North American <br />Agroforestry Conference in Mimlesota <br />this past June. <br />Ferrg Fanb (Water Resources Science <br />alunnms) co-authored the following <br />papers: "Point-Nonpoint Source Water <br />Quality Trading: A Case Study in the <br />Miresota River Basin" in the Journal of <br />the American Water Resources Association <br />~d "Ch~uacterization of Soil Algal <br />Bioavailable Phosphorus in the Mimlesota <br />River Basiri' in Soil Science Society of <br />America Journal. <br />Erni It®, Avery Cool; Shirrnepnan <br />(Linmological Research Center and <br />Geology ~md Geophysics), and Len <br />FeIl•rirabton (Entomology); along jvith <br />researchers fionn the St. Croix Watershed <br />Research Station; St_ Olaf College, and <br />Minne~ra~ <br />the Belgian National Museum returned <br />to Mongolia in August to conduct field <br />work with scientists from the National <br />University= of Mongolia. Their project <br />is a continuation of a survey begtm last <br />sununer of water chemistry, biology, and <br />sediment composition in laltes of the <br />Valley of the Great Lakes bettiveen the <br />Altai and Khangai mountains. <br />David 1~ulla (Soil, Water, and Climate) <br />Qave a keynote speech titled "A U.S. <br />perspective on TMDLs and effectiveness <br />of BMPs for erosion control" for an <br />all-European-Union conference on soil <br />conservation management; perception and <br />policy held in Mont Saint Aignan, France, <br />on June ~, 200. <br />Vinay I~Tanbia (Water Resources Science) <br />received a travel grant from the Water <br />Resources Science Graduate Program to <br />present a paper at the American Society <br />of Agriculttual Engineers' (ASAE) Tlird <br />Conference on Watershed Management <br />to Meet Water Quality Standards and <br />Emerging TMDLs, March ~-9; 200; <br />inAthuita, Georgia. He also presented <br />nvo papers at the ASAE 200 Amnial <br />International Meeting, July 17-20, 200, <br />in Tampa; Florida. <br />Kay l~evvtaran (Fisheries, Wildlife, and <br />Conservation Biology) received the <br />College of Nahrral Resources' Richard C. <br />Newman Art of Teaching award in May <br />200. <br />Erie ®tto (Water Resources Science) <br />received lis Professional Engineer license <br />in civil engineering from the State of <br />Mimlesota on June 17; 200. <br />Carl Richards (Sea Grant, Biology- <br />UMD) has been appointed Director of the <br />U.S. EnviromrentalProtectionAgencys <br />(EPA) Mid-Continent Ecology Divisioin <br />(iV~D) in Duluth, Mimlesota. The title of lis <br />Plan B paper vas '`The Influence <br />of Biological 1 actors ou the <br />Effectiveness of Altus Treatments.' <br />Springob was advised by Larry <br />Balser (Water Resources Center). <br />and Envirormiental Effects Research <br />Laboratory, headquartered in North <br />Carolina. <br />~'otis Sotirop~oerlos (Civil Engineering <br />and St Anthony Falls Laboratory) has <br />accepted the position of Director of the St. <br />Anthony Falls Laboratory, beginning in <br />JaraLUry 2006. Sotiropotilos was previously <br />a professor of civil engineering at the <br />Georgia Institute of Technology; where he <br />conducted research in the Computational <br />Hydrodynamics andBio$uids Laboratory. <br />Leh S~wacl~namer (Water Resources <br />Center and Enviromnental Health <br />Sciences) will be hosting renowned <br />biologist Dr. David Schindler (University <br />of Alberta) in one of the Great <br />Conversations series, February 28, <br />2006. Sc1_indler researches the effects of <br />antluopogeric disturbance on alpine 1~tlces. <br />Jeffl' Werner (Water Resources Science) <br />was the lead author on a recent article <br />in the Center for Urban and Regional <br />Affairs' Reporter titled "Photochenical <br />Transformation of Antibiotics in <br />Mimlesota Waters." <br />
