The clear plastic tube is
2 feet long x lr/z-inches wide, with a
release valve at the bottom. A stopper
inserted at the bottom is painted black
and white, so that when you look
down into the tube a distinct symbol
is visible.
To measure water clarity, the tube
is filled with water collected from a
stream or river. booking down into
the tube, water is released through the
valve until the black and white symbol
is visible. The depth of the water
when the symbol becomes visible is
recorded in centimeters, marked on
the side of the tube.
IE the symbol is visible when the
tube is full, the transparency reading
is ">60 centimeters." A greater trans-
parency reading reflects higher water
clarity.
_, , __.. ~- ~y
J Ceiteria ~Or
Assessment ___ ___ __ __
_.____-
ment_ If there are not sufficient tur ~ ~ me - ----="~` -- - _ ____.-
be combined to meet the outlined criteria
--~--
and totol suspended solids observations ma __~ __ . - _
arency_ _ --
transp , _ -` -- _
__ _ -- -
for assessment. the mean of the values wil e.
_ _ --- -
arometer in one day,__ -
__
-- -__
I4 there are multiple observations o a sng e_ ___
_- -
_ _ __-_
__
__ ~ _Y
----'~°_~ ~ ~ the hierarchy. a_ __ _
used in the assessment process - _ _ __
arameters in a single day ,_ -.
__. -
_ _- -
so r s __ -_.
If there-are observations of more thon one of t e t ree_p _
P_
-_
consideration for assessment ur _ ses_will be turbidity t}~en trons arency, then to a s
__
--.
__ ____-
stondard ' : _ _ - -
__ __ _ turbid
__
p waterbod~ is in viol- at!c_n_ of t~ __----- _ ___ _- --
_ _..
_--
- ---- -- -
tube readin_ is Tess than 20 centimeters., ___-_
9 --- _ --
Atransparency ____~___ ___"--
_. _
is impaired i ;_.__ _--- _-__ --- --- -- -- --
A waterbody_,-_-_-- --_-_ -_
- --- - _
'°~ ~ ndent observations, from a minimum of
There are at least 20 indePe __~_._____~ .-------- __~ - _ -_-
__ --- -- -
_:__.__ _ _ eriod - ---_-
2 years over the 10-Year assessment p - _ ~ ____ - -- ---- _ _ ,_
-- -- -
And ~ -- - --- ------ --- -- - _ -- - --- _ _
_ ----
earsand months so o_s to s_ - -_.
--- -
_
_ _ Observations are_distribute_ across Y__-- - rcolly April " SePtemberl __, ___ _- -----
~~.,tntlve of the open woter se..-.a, -son ftyp~_ , _ - -
And __ _ _--_-_ -- _- _ _ /~
At least 3 observat snot snor and 10% of observations are in violation of the standard. -J __ _ _ '
~_ And_,J _~-------_`~ "- J- _~~ ~ the "udgment of P_CA sta4t _ ----
-Volunteer collected observations are corroborated by _-_~ - -
local resource and 1 or_ watershed Project staff~if available _ ___-_
and by ~ --- ___ ------_~--------- - - - . ~,
_`~- ----- _-_-. _ _ i' Page 7
