downspouts away from buildings and onto grass or ground cover, where the nutrients will be
absorbed and recycled.
* If you live near a storm sewer grate, remove debris after every rain. Bag it and place in the
garbage.
These other lawn care techniques will also keep your yard healthy while protecting water quality:
* Mow often and clip only the top third of the grass blade. Taller grass shades out weeds and
encourages deep root growth allowing more water to naturally seep into the lawn.
* Water infrequently and deeply in the early morning. Over watering can cause fungal diseases.
* Don't apply fertilizer or treat dandelions during the hot days of the summer. Fall is the best
time to fertilize your lawn and treat broadleaf weeds.
The Grass Lake Watershed Management Organization (GLWMO) manages stormwater with the
goal to protect and improve the area's many lakes and other water resources. It is a joint powers
agreement between the cities of Roseville and Shoreview. For more information contact Duane
Schwartz of the GLWMO at 651.490.2200 or visit the Website at
www.ci.shoreview.mn.us/GLWMO/.
~ :,_~-1
' ~~ ~~
/~ .~~ ~.
~® ~.~
.r 7 ~
-" ~' ~ 1
