The total maximum daily load (TMDL} study was pursued to diagnose the cause and solution to high
chloride concentrations in Shingle Creek and is the first of its kind in the Twin Cities Metro Area. The work was
completed for the Shingle Creek Watershed Management Commission. Road salt application is the major source of
chloride. With increasing development and use of road salt, chloride is likely to become a concern for other metro area
watersheds. Mr. Bischoff will describe the connection between road salt use and impacts on metro area streams.
Presenters: Joseph M Bischoff, Wenck Associates Inc.
Kevin Larson, City of Brooklyn Park
Seminar B Watershed Project Financing: Projects of Common Benefit
Authorized in 2001 by the Legislature, the Buffalo-Red River Watershed District has successfully used this new
taxing authority to help fund the development of a multipurpose flood damage reduction/natural resource
enhancement project near Barnesville.
