From the Desk of
Todd l~. Bolin
Chairmen,
Freshwater Society Board of Directors
.~reslaater risi .Initiative
'r', he Freshwater Society (FWS) is embarking on a new initiative
,j~ that will, we trust, have a profound impact on freshwater
resources now and for years to come.
When the Freshwater Society began its journey over 40 years
ago, lakes and rivers were deteriorating. FWS made a decision to
sponsor numerous doctoral scientists to examine the root causes
and consequences, and determine what remedial and preventive
strategies would be necessary to reverse the deterioration.
Today, we generally know what to do in order to conserve,
enhance, and strengthen our freshwater resources. What we need
now is an engaged and knowledgeable citizenry that "sees" water
as the finite resource it is and "embraces" strategies to conserve and
protect it in order to ensure sustainability. In essence, we need a
cultural shift around water resources.
This fresh look, new attitude, and new set of values regarding
our water resources will, hopefully, become as commonplace and
internalized as the need to recycle or wear seatbelts. Guarding water
from fertilizer run-off, supporting alternative water sources for lawn
watering, creating buffer strips on shore land, and a host of other
water protections will pay off immediately and into the future.
To begin this initiative, we have asked a group of highly respected
and committed professionals to assist us in evaluating and prioritizing
the critical water issues before us. Gene Merriam, President of the
Freshwater Society, and former DNR Commissioner and Minnesota
state senator, will lead the Freshwater Guardianship Council in its
efforts to identify areas and practices that will move us along that
cultural shift to renewable, sustainable, and enhanced waters.
Our next Facets issue as well as our soon-to-be remodeled website
will profile the members of the Guardianship Council, as well as the
specific challenges the Freshwater Society is undertaking to improve,
protect, and maintain our water resources.
