Mark
Maloney, Shoreview Public Works DirectorlCity Engineer is a
former LRRB-RIC chair who got the idea for trying pervious
concrete from his experience on the LRRB-RIC and as a current
TERRA Research and Implementation Committee Chair. Pervious
concrete has also been used by Minneapolis and Richfield for
parking lots.
Pervious concrete, made of gravel and cement minus the sand
(that gives regular concrete its impenetrable density). allows
raimvater to pass through the street surface to prevent damaging
runoff. Traditional methods of piping stormwater to settling ponds
eventually fills the ponds with sediment, including salt. sand
and oil, which declines the water quality. The pervious concrete
provides a natural filter for pollutants.
Pervious concrete requires special installation and maintenance
and is more expensive than regular concrete. The performance of
the concrete is still being evaluated, but results so far have been
positive. In the new Stormwater Maintenance BMP Resource
Guide pervious concrete was identified as a newer BMP for
stormwater management.
" ~a "~ ~
~v: ~- r
;~
~ ~ ~
s ~ z., -~ ., ~~ c-
~-
'~ ~ ,^hr
` u`
~ ' .'$~
;-. The
bitumen is foamed by adding a moisture to a stream of bitumen.
which spontaneously causes it to foam.
Foamed asphalt has become a useful road rehabilitation tool for
many countries and states within the US. Research beneficial to local
engineers has been completed regarding best practices, construction
techniques, mix design, specifications, and performance of foamed
asphalt recycled pavement. This research was used to develop
design guidelines and specifications for the use of foamed asphalt
in Minnesota. Mn/DOT testing has indicated relatively uniform
structural strength and cohesiveness.
In Minnesota, Fillmore and Olmsted Counties have used foamed
asphalt CIR on projects in the last five years. The projects are
wearing relatively well; they are not old enough to yet determine their
overall lifetime performance. Future implementation and monitoring
of foamed asphalt in Minnesota will further confirm constructability
and performance.
LRRB Report Number: 2009-09 (O.~i MB)
~ ~~u•.lrrb.org/pdf/200909.pdf
Principal Investigator: Roger Olson
roser.oison@dot.state.mn.us
651-366-5517
L ®rks ® s
Pavement Management Workshop
September 10, Ruttger's Resort in Bemidji
November 18.
