The information is then sent back to city hall via cell phone technology. It is also capable of being sent over fiber when and if the city builds out a fiber optic backbone. The backhaul could possibly be sent via the web and some systems do this. We are talking large amounts of data. We are not aware of web technology that communicates directly with a water meter. Some older systems used the hardwired landline phone systems but that became unreliable due to people moving often and more recently as in Minneapolis a large number of homeowners no longer have a landline phone. They are migrating to the newer radio technology. The data collection units that communicate to all of the meters in the city and send the information back to city hall is a small part of the overall cost of the project.
