June 8, 2010 <br />Item 2 <br />Approve Minutes of May 11, 2010 <br />i Human Rights Commission <br />2 DRAFT -Meeting Minutes -DRAFT <br />3 May 11, 2010 <br />4 <br />5 Commissioners Present: Chair David Singleton; Commissioners Gary Grefenberg, Liz <br />6 Jaeger, Thelma McKenzie and Barb Yates. <br />7 <br />8 1. Call to Order: Chair David Singleton called meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. The Clerk <br />9 called the roll. <br />10 <br />11 2. Approve Minutes of April 13, 2010 <br />12 <br />13 Commissioner Gary Grefenberg moved approval of the minutes with a technical correction on <br />14 line 147, adding the word "he" before the word "helped." Commissioner Liz Jaeger seconded <br />15 the motion. Motion prevailed unanimously. <br />16 <br />17 3. Staff/Committee Reports <br />18 <br />19 3a. Visions of Success Subcommittee <br />20 <br />21 Commissioner Jaeger reviewed plans for the Regional Human Rights Commission meeting on <br />22 May 27, at 5:00 p.m. at the Roseville Skating Center. She said the focus of the meeting will be <br />23 on state and local government efforts to enforce the MN Human Rights Act and promote human <br />24 rights through education, outreach and engagement. Speakers include Beth Bibus, Enforcement <br />25 Officer at the Minnesota Department of Human Rights (MDHR), Kristi Rudelius-Palmer, Co- <br />26 Director of the U of M Human Rights Center and Commissioner Jaeger. Mario Hernandez will <br />27 moderate. <br />28 <br />29 Area Human Rights Commissions have been invited to share successes. The Subcommittee is <br />30 concerned because few people have registered yet. The Commission discussed ways to get the <br />31 word out and get more people registered. The Commission asked Staff Liaison Carolyn Curti to <br />32 invite staff of the Center for Victims of Torture and members of the Karen community. All <br />33 Commissioners were encouraged to help spread the word. <br />34 <br />35 3b. Program Planners Subcommittee <br />36 <br />37 Commissioner Grefenberg reviewed the report, saying they are focusing on developing a work <br />38 plan to develop a civic engagement framework. The subcommittee believes it will take a year to <br />39 develop the two strategies 1) to assess city activities and 2) to establish neighborhood groups. <br />40 Commissioner Grefenberg discussed ways to involve more people in the planning process, <br />41 including inviting representatives from the other commissions and civic organizations, such as <br />42 the League of Women Voters. . <br />43 <br />44 Commissioners discussed other resources including local churches, rotary, Isaiah Group. <br />45 <br />
