Roseville Human Rights Commission
DRAFT Minutes -September 14, 2010
Planners are looking for a third speaker, a person of color who has lived in Roseville for many
years and talk about the changes he/she has seen. The planners are changing the focus of the
dialogue to be more action oriented, explaining that the previous two dialogues were getting
people to talk, and this dialogue will focus more on civic engagement.

Commissioner Thelma McKenzie asked that commissioners review the purpose statement and
send editing suggestions to the planning committee.

The next planning meeting is Tuesday, September 21 at 3:30 p.m. at City Hall. The meeting will
be posted and all commissioners are welcome.

4b. MIC's Tenth Annual World Quest

Commissioner McKenzie said the MIC World Quest is on hold until the Commission gets a
youth representative who can help identify youth organizations and interests. Commissioner
McKenzie said the Roseville Area Schools sent several names.

Commissioners discussed the best way to recruit students, whether to have interviews and
whether to have more than one youth involved. They discussed the role of a youth representative,
noting that they want youths who have a variety of interests. Commissioners discussed if we
were reaching all st-dents. They asked about sending to the private schools and the Mounds
View School District, which includes a small portion of Roseville.

Chair Singleton directed staff to put together a packet and send to all of the schools in Roseville.

4c. Regional Department of Human Rights Event

Commissioner Jaeger reported that the Regional Department of Human Rights (DHR) event is
set for Apri17, 2011 in Roseville. They are trying to line up the same speakers as the April 2010
event and hoping to involve other local Human Rights Commissions in the organizing. DHR
staff Mario Hernandez is on board with the planning. The committee will devote more time to
the planning after the October dialogue.

5. Public Comment

No one appeared to speak.

6. Future Agenda Items

Curti said that the Commission elects the Chair and Vice-Chair at the October meeting.

Commissioner Kennedy apologized for arriving late. She brought data from the 2007 Minnesota
Student Survey, a statewide survey that is conducted every three years in which students in sixth,
ninth and twelfth voluntarily complete an attitudinal survey about their schools.
