Roseville faces three challenges that my experience and skills could help address. First,
like many cities, Roseville needs to maintain and attract young families as residents and
homeowners, while ensuring that its long-time residents have a meaningful option of
living independently in their homes with appropriate support or in other housing options
within the city. My recent experience looking for a home in different cities included
weighing Roseville's relative strengths and weaknesses from the perspective of a young
family. In addition, my involvement running a block nurse program has given me insight
into the critical need for seniors to have the services and housing options necessary to
maintain their ties to their community.
Second, sustaining and developing a strong commercial tax base and competitive
business culture constitute a key challenge for any city. Although I do not have a lot of
direct experience in this area, my legal experience and understanding of government and
business would support the Council's efforts to continue Roseville's apparent record as
an attractive place to do business. As an attorney, I would welcome analyzing the details
of development proposals, including any related procedural and legal issues. Further, I
have worked for government and business, and therefore recognize the distinctions and
similarities between these two worlds.
Finally, Roseville government has the perception of being fractious. As a recent resident,
I do not know whether the perception is real, nor do I begin to understand the city's
political history. In fact, I believe my new residency would offer a fresh perspective on
the city's governance. In addition, my strongest skill is working with people to reach
consensus, which I have exercised in my professional career and in my community work.
I would bring to the Council a spirit of respect and an enthusiasm for seeking common
ground.
