/'roJect Understanding and Approach
❑ Project Understanding
Situated midway between Minneapolis and St. Paul, Roseville is a city
that is essentially fully developed. As the city has grown, leaders have
had the foresight to set aside land as city parks, trails, and natural areas.
Protecting these natural features and providing compatible recreational
access so residents can appreciate them is an important part of both the
cultural and natural heritage of the city. The effort can be challenging
and rewarding.
Most communities' citizens recognize the inherent value in planning and
protecting their parks, open spaces and natural areas. Preserving natural
communities helps improve everyone's quality of life, and can help
attract and keep businesses and residents. Such areas provide
opportunities for active and passive recreation, and for viewing and
learning about wildlife, ecological relationships, and natural history. In
many cases natural areas serve as landmarks or distinguishing features
for the local community, and have important historical associations. It
has also been shown that property values increase in close proximity to
natural open spaces. These areas can also serve important functions for
the community in stormwater management and maintaining the quality
of wetlands, lakes and streams.
A detailed natural resource inventory of five city parks in Roseville will
help the city to further understand the quality, value, and significance of
these areas. The inventory will serve as a foundation for creating step-
by-step management strategies for protecting and improving the health
of natural communities, as well as integrating recreation and education
where appropriate. The inventory will also identify potential Greenway
Corridors that can connect these natural resources and increase their
long-term health and value. The Natural Resource Inventory and
Management Plan project will include the following parks:
► Acorn Park
► Central Park
. Langton lake
. Reservoir Woods
► Villa Park
❑ Project Approach
Our approach to the Roseville Natural Resource Inventory and
Management Plan emphasizes an ecosystem-based perspective
combined with a practical, implementable approach designed to serve as
a foundation for natural resource and land management efforts.
This approach stresses the importance of viewing the entire ecosystem,
including people, as one interconnected unit rather than as independent
parts. This means that the inventory, evaluation and management of
natural areas will consider such factors as connectivity between natural
!ll City of Roseui//e Natural ReSOU/Ce IINNanagement 1
 Bnnestro Rosene, /indei6k andASSOC'Idles, /
