Van Dyke Street
Maplewood, MN SS109-3796
January 4, 041
Mr. John Loitus
Fire Marshall
City of Roseville
2660 Civic Center Drive
Roseville, MN 55113
Re: Burn Permits - Prairie Management
Dear Mr. Loftus:
Tel: 6S 1-748-2500
Fax: 6S 1-748-2508
www.co.ramsey.mn.us
The Ramsey County Parks and Recreation Department requests permits to conduct
controlled burns this spring at two sites in Roseville. The purpose of the burns is to
improve the quality of the prairie vegetation. Periodic burns stimulate prairie grasses
and flowers and eliminate non-prairie vegetation.
The ill'St site is the natural area around the ponds at Lake McCarrons County Park.
This site was burned last year. We anticipate three consecutive years of burns, and
then, once every 3-4 years.
The second site is an area within the city of Roseville's Reservoir Woods Park.
Ramsey County is providing assistance to the city to begin management of the prairie
at this park. Areas have been burned the past two years, and improvement in the
prairie vegetation is becoming apparent.
Two permits area requested for the Reservoir Woods site. The first will be to
several brush piles when there is snow cover. Snow cover will provide a safe
situation for burning. The piles are sumac that was cut out of the prairie areas
burn
last
summer. Burning is the most feasible way of removing the brush piles. Although the
burn will be completed in one or two days, the permit is requested for one month after
the date of approval. The amount of time will give some flexibility for proper weather
conditions. The month of February would be best.
The second permit, will be for burning grass in the spring. The site is surrounded by
trails, which have provided good fire breaks the past two years. Ramsey County will
provide all necessary equipment and personnel. I request that this permit, and the
one for Lake McCarrons, be valid from April 1— May 10, 2001. Please call me at
(651) 748-2500, Ext. 330, if you want me to attend any meetings.
Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,
  U. ---.-
Lar E Holrnbr i
Supervisor of Planning and Development
LE Hljh M i n n esota'sFiretHomeltoleCau
cc: Bob Bierscheid ,R,o elepaper with minimum w,o on,
