Friends of the NTississippi River - Storm Drain Stenciling
Storm Drain
Stencilin Pro ram
g g
Friends of the Mississippi River is
looking for volunteers to join our Storm
Drain Stenciling Program. Volunteers
paint storm drains with the message
"Please! Don't Pollute! Drains to River,"
and distribute door hangers to houses
and businesses in the stenciled
neighborhood. The complete stenciling
kits are available free of charge, and an
FMR representative will be available to
meet with your group to explain the project as well as non-point source
pollution. Volunteers living within the project area (Minneapolis, Saint
Paul, or in the Minnehaha Creek watershed) are able to stencil around their
own neighborhoods. This is an ideal opportunity to improve our local water
resources through a hands-on outdoor activity.
Page 1 ofZ
The purpose
Storm drains are a part of the storm sewer system which carries stormwater
from rain and snow-melt directly from the city's lawns and streets to rivers
and lakes. Many people don't realize that the water that flows into storm
drains is not treated, thereby providing a direct route for pollutants such as
pesticides, antifreeze, fertilizer, motor oil, pet waste, and grass clippings to
be washed into the Mississippi River. The door-hangers provide residents
with techniques for proper disposal of substances that are commonly
dumped or washed into storm drains.
PI.FA.F.!
