SITE
We have races in the flats of the Midwest to the mountainous areas where the main
problem is finding flat areas to slow down. In Florida, they race off drawbridge ramps to get
elevation. What do you want to look for? Safety is foremost in any decision and especially..
in site selection. You need a hill that you can erect some type of fencing to keep the public
out of the racing area. It needs to be wide enough for two lanes, approximately twenty feet
minimum, with an adequate, flat run-out area to stop the cars (slightly uphill is even better).
A route to return the cars to the top without stopping the race to go up the track is another
feature to look for. The slope should be 600 to 1200 feet long and of a sufficient drop to
attain speeds of twenty-five to thirty-three miles per hour in a derby car. If necessary,
elevated starting ramps may be used in flat areas. A rule of thumb in hill testing is to coast
a standard size automobile from a standing start down the hill; If it reaches twenty miles
per hour at the bottom, a derby car would attain about thirty miles per hour on the same
hill.
OBLIGATIONS
Your main obligations are asfollows: 1) to run the race after you have announced it in your
community; 2) enforce the rules and safety regulations uniformly, fairly and without
prejudice; and, 3) get therace cars and champion(s) to Akron at the time specified and get
them back home.
ASSISTANCE
Overwhelmed? Do not be. In most areas of the country, we have,Regional Directors to
advise you and help you in any way they can. Headquarters is open Monday through
Friday year round from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Eastem Time, to assist you with any
problems that may arise.
Your next step is to complete the enclosed Race Area Request form and New Race
Questionnaire and return them to Akron so we can get you started.
