Department Approval:
Item Description:
REQUEST FOR COUNCII, ACTION
1Tanager Reviewed
, r' /%
Discussion of Trunk Highway 36 Lighting Project
DATE: 08/27/O1
ITEM NO.: F _ 2
Agenda Section:
Reports
Background: Earlier this summer, the City was made aware of a lighting maintenance project
being performed on Trunk Highway 36. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has
installed 33 new lights, each at a height of 100 feet tall. Attached is a map of the area
showing the locations of the new lights as well as the properties that have been in touch with
City Staff about light pollution concems.
Since this was brought to our attention, City Staff has been working with these residents and
State Department of Transportation representatives. Additional shields are being installed on
some of the lights to direct the light away from residential properties. They are also taking
light meter readings to determine what the new light intensities are in this area.
The Council requested that a representative of the State come to a Council meeting to discuss
the project and possible ways that they could address the concerns posed by City residents.
RECOMIVNDED COUNCIL ACTION:
This is an update, there is no action required at this time.
Prepared by: Debra Bloom
