Under the proposed pay plan, the average part-time firefighter (based on hours worked for 2001) would receive
an increase of approximately $385 per year before taxes.
Policy Implications
The recommended pay increases are consistent with the city's policy goal of attracting and retaining quality
employees. The proposed pay increase also brings the pay for our firefighters closer to the pay scales for other
fire departments in the twin-city metro area.
Financial
Pay increases for firefighters and officers were funded from the contingency fund for 1999, 2000 and 2001.
The anticipated financial impact of this recommendation for the sixty-five paid-on-call firefighters and officers
would be $25,000. Due to budgetary savings anticipated as a result of the implementation of new fire
department call-out protocols, the additional $25,000 projected to be necessary to fund these wage increases can
be paid out of currently budgeted fire department funds; no budget amendment is necessary and contingency
funds should not be needed.
Staff Recommendation
Staff recommends City Council approval of the proposed 2002 part-time firefighters and officers pay increases,
effective March 1, 2002.
Council Action Requested
Motion to approve a fifty-cent per hour increase for part-time firefighters and officers call pay and shift pay,
effective March 1, 2002 to be funded from currently budgeted personnel service funds.
