Application for Vacancy on Roseville Human Rights Commission
Amy J. Ihlan
Unless human rights are respected and protected, it is impossible for the members
of our community and nation to live good lives or be truly free. I believe that it is
important for the City of Roseville to uphold a strong commitment to human rights,
including basic principles of equal opportunity and non-discrimination. I also
believe that public education and discussion on human rights issues is especially
critical in the aftermath of September 11.
The role of Roseville's Human Rights Commission should be to lead and promote
public education and discussion on human rights, to provide a forum where
Roseville residents can raise human rights concerns, and to advise and consult with
the mayor and city council on these issues.
I am very well qualified to be a member of the Roseville Human Rights Commission
because of my experience as a lawyer and a teacher. I am familiar with the
Minnesota Human Rights Act, as well as other state and federal civil rights laws.
As the Affirmative Action Officer at Cornell College, I gained first hand experience
making sure that civil rights and anti-discrimination laws were put into practice,
and was responsible for investigating and trying to resolve discrimination
complaints. I am also a trained mediator and arbitrator.
I would be honored to have the chance to serve on the Human Rights Commission,
and to become involved in Roseville's city government. If you have any questions, or
need any further information in support of my application, please let me know.
