Families in Belfast Ireland live in aons�r,�nt fear of dying <br />from a violent aot aoming from years of hatred over who should <br />control the Politics and religion in Northern Ireland. <br />This confliot got started in the 1600% when Oliver Cromwell <br />opened up Northern Ireland to Scottish and �ngl�sh Protestanta for <br />settlement. Ca�b.olia lrish were already settled in Northern Ireland. <br />There were enough protestant Scottish and �sh who moved into <br />the Northern Ireland region that they quickly dominated the <br />population. The Irjsh Catholic3s became the minority. Sin�e there <br />were so many Protestant settlers, dsais�ons and planning were <br />always made in favor of the Protestants. Irlsh Cathol�c3s did not <br />have the aclva.ntages that the Protestants es�oyea.. The Protestant <br />population controlled government there. The �rotestants also <br />controlled most of the industry. In the 1920 s Ireland beoame a <br />republic and became independent from England except for Northern <br />Ireland. The Protestants would not vote to support and Irish <br />republic in "their" region. This brought about a lot of conflicst and <br />hatrscl between the Protestants and Cat,holics in Northern Ireland. <br />The Ca�holics wanted to be unified with the repub]io of Ireland, the <br />Protestants wanted to remain separate. The Catholic Irish Republic <br />side assassinated. an �ltsh Dignitary, Lord Mount Bat�an. There <br />were fights in the neighborhoods of Londonderry and Belfast where <br />people were killed and hurt. England sent in an army to keep <br />peace. The English offieers arrested many Irish they thought were <br />causing the troul�le. The violence has aontinusd between the two <br />sides. The Irish Catholic Nationalists believe they have a ri�t to <br />more control in government and better jobs. 'rh+e Protestan� <br />Loyali� feel they ��.,r�� �� �t to their oppor�.u�ity in Northern <br />Ireland. <br />Peace talks between the Irish Catholic Nationalists and the <br />Protesta,nt Loyalists were taking place when the two girls were <br />assaulted going to school.
