The North Metro I-35W Corridor Coalition is an organization of seven
contiguous cities along Interstate 35W to the north of Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Many of the issues that each community is facing today carry across city
boundaries, so it makes sense to work as a coalition to address sub-regional
issues such as housing, transportation, employment and contamination. The
Metropolitan Council, in its Regional Blueprint and Smart Growth Initiatives,
advocates this level of coordination among clustered cities to achieve an
integrated approach to planning. The Metropolitan Council has been a major
financial contributor to this effort.
Arden Hills, Blaine, Circle Pines, Mounds View, New Brighton, Shoreview and
Roseville have participated in the Coalition since late 1995. Looking at the seven
cities as one north metro region, the area encompasses over 83 square miles of
land, 156,000 residents, 85,000 jobs and 60,000 households. There are over 46,000
parcels of land in this study area, of which 5,000 acres are commercial or
industrial.
Business is booming along the I-35W
corridor as more businesses and
residents make the North Metro their
home. Construction of new residential
units spiked in 1999 to 1,258 units last
year. That's up from 489 units in 1997
and 752 units in 1998. Construction
permits have more than doubled from
4,761 in 1996 to 9,910 in 1999. And the
chart at right shows that new
construction overall is steadily rising
from year to year, up 58 percent from
1996.
The North Metro I-35W Corridor Coalition cities are integral to the economic engine of
the Twin Cities. Consider that according to Metropolitan Council estimates, nearly one-
quarter of all Ramsey County jobs are located along the Corridor, as well as 18 percent
of the jobs in Anoka County. The northern suburban Coalition communities draw from
the full metro area labor shed because of their optimal locations just north of both
Minneapolis and St. Paul, and their prime access to Interstate 35W.
