Notes from conversations with Senator John Marty,
regarding the prospects for a Roseville sales tax bill in
the state legislature: NB
Would not close the door, not rule it out,
certainly willing to listen and learn more - but
he is very unlikely to support. Even with strong
support, passage of such a bill has to be seen as
highly unlikely. It would be an extremely hard
sell in the Legislature.
He spoke with the chairman of the Senate Tax
Committee: that key legislator is not
enthusiastic about the concept, and said he
doesn't believe there is support for such a
concept in either party in either house of the
Legislature.
To Senator Marty, the fairness issue is
significant: under a Roseville sales tax the
burden of the increased sales tax falls on many
people who may not benefit from the proposed
facilities .
For example, Shoreview built their own
community center, yet many residents in
Shoreview shop in Roseville and may question
the fairness of paying a higher sales tax to
support facilities in Roseville that do not
particularly serve them.
