Curti, Carolyn
From: Donnell M. Lee
Sent: Sunday, July 21, 2002 2:36 PM
To: carolyn.curti@ci.roseville.mn.us
Subject: community center
Carolyn,
I wasn't able to make the public meeting on July 16th but I thought I would give you my ideas. I would like to
see a community center in RoseviNe. I have always enjoyed taking the kids to the Shoreview center. They have
been there for swimming, and birthday parties, and gym activities. Now they are older and as teenagers would be
able to use a communiry center that had teenage activities, impromptu basketball games, vollyeball, swimming,
fitness center activities etc.. A performig arts theatre that children could be involved in too would be nice.
Parkview Center School may be able to use that kind of space for their theatre program as well.
I personally would enjoy having an indoor running krack and a fitness center close-by. Something like the
YMCA has would be great.
As for as paying for it how does Shoreview pay for theirs? Maybe something similar would work for us. I
personally would have a Y membership if the place were closer to me. I would certainly pay a family membership
fee if the same kinds of facilities were offered here in Roseville in an easily accessible location. Reduced rates
could, and probably should be available for people with limited incomes. I may be the only person in the city that
would think a tax hike would be okay, but why not, for the health and welfare of the community. 1 would also like
to see a fast &/or slow food restaurant in the facility so people can make the trip to the community center a"day
thing" and the rent that you could charge them would help to pay for the facility and it's upkeep.
Location would be important. I like the idea of an acivities "campus" at the oval site. Building up above the
indoor ice arena, and/or up and out towards county road C from the police statian .(A fitness facility could be
used by the police officers to keep them in good heaith.) We would need more parking space. We couid have
shuttles Rosedale on a regular schedule going to the center. We could have increased bicycle parking and have
bike/walking trail bridges over the busy streets around the center, ie Snelling and county road C. (There's also
the Fairoiew Communiry center site, but that is on the edge of the city and I would like something a litt{e more
central.)
Thank you for your consideration.
Donnell M.
