0
hat I can do in my everyday actions to promote human rights
All people are born equal so they should all have the same
rights to do what they want. People should not be judged because
of their race" culture, religion or because of a disability they
have. They should not be judged because they are not good at
ports, dress funny or like a different kind of music.
Not everyone is a jock. When someone joins a team sport
that isn't very good, I try and give them pointers and help them
C like part of the team. When they make a good play, l let
them know they did a good job to help build their confidence so
they continue to do better in the future.
When a person is handicapped or disabled, you should not
assume that they are helpless. They have a lot of pride in the
fact that they overcome everyday obstacles that I take for
granted. ening d oors and getting a drink of water c
Op an be a
difficult thing for a handicapped person. Instead of just doing
everything for a handicapped person, you should ask them if they
want help. Bv treating them with respect aod as a friend, you
lCok past the handicap and look at the person' A good example
would be two years ago when I was playing baseball. A player on
the other team hit a good line drive and took off for first.
When he was between first and second he stopped running. Here
his artificial leg had come undone so he was hooking it back in
p1ace. Everyone waited until he was done and he went to second
base as if nothing had happened.
I have a cousin my age tha was born deaf. I see him once
in a while and we play frisbee" volleyoall and football. We have
some problems communicating beause I don't know sign 1anguage
very well. We end up with our own form of communicating.
don't treat him any different than anyone else an e have a lot
of fun together. Just like normal twelve year o1ds.
The school is a big melting pot' Because there are so many
kids of different backgrounds, the classes can be made up oƒ
blacks, whites, Mexicans, Chinese and so on. Havir.g been in
classes with mixed nationalities since my first dav at school, I
don't think its any big deal. I just treat Lem all the same.
Like the Golden Rules says, 'Do uoto others as you would
have them do unto you.'. Everybody should have he freedom to do
what they want. My responsibility is to treat everyone equal as
I w0 uld like to be treated myself.
