Liz Marti nson, Four 2
One day a family from Africa moored into a house about four houses down. All of
the people in the neighborhood disagreed with their ways of settling things.
Since I had met a lot of the new people that have moved onto our block in the
past fire gears, al of there different from their neighbor I didn't think the new
people from Africa would be such a problem at all.' In their family there was
mother, father a boar about nine or ten years old, and a girl about my age,
thirteen. I had seen the girl t school walking down the hall by herself, eating
lunch by herself, and in class just sitting and doing nothing. She didn't seem to
make much of an effort to make friends but nobody else made much of an effort
to m eet: her.
One day in Science we had to work in partners. She couldn't find anybody to
work with, so I decided It was time to introduce myself and ask her if she would
like to be my partner. she told rye her name, which is Emily, and then we got
started. E very time after that, when we needed a partner, I looked over at her
and she responded with a nod. She was a lot nicer than our neighbors were
giving her credit for. If she is rice than the rest of her family rust be nice. Then I
got an idea for how I can get the neighborhood to find out how nice they really
are. When l got home, l Introduced some of the neighborhood boys to the new
boy. They played catch and it looked like they were having a lot of fun. Emily
was dancing around on the grass, it looked like some sort of African dance. If
you teach me that dance I will teach you how we dance here." she responded
with a quick "okay"
Emily invited me in and I met her parents. They were quite aware of all the rude
comments. their were getting from the neighbors. I asked them if they might like
to start a neighborhood watch, because that's what our block could use, plus
the neighbors would get to see how nice they really are and there would be n o
problem.. They agreed to that Idea. and thanked rye. A couple rights later after
the first neighborhood watch meeting, everything finally came together and the
new people were invited to picnics and parties. The new people were finally
accepted for who they really are and not for what they look like or wher.e they
came from.
