Every day when you turn. on a television, look at newspaper, or read. a magazine you see it. It grows and builds up like the flue. It is very destructive to many people: it is racist tensions and crimes, it is sexual harrassment, and, it is gay and lesbian bashing. It is the misuse and misunderstanding of personal power. One person cannot b e an effective voice for this problem in. our country. Just thinking that is a false understanding of individualism. You may s -ay, "Look at Martin Luther King, Jr. lie made a difference", but he was a voice in community. Did Martin Luther King march alone? was he the only one to boycott the busses? His "I Have a Dream" speech was heard by hundreds of thousands of people on the Washington Fall in Washington, D.C. People who hart, disturb, or fill another person's life with fear are misusing the poorer they have over other people. This power should be used in a life affirming, positive way. There are many other ways for people to feel good about themselves. if you have a high self esteem you won't feel bad enough about yourself that you need to pmt other people down. Power can be good, too. Think of all the goad things you can do with power. The lowest ranking member of a company can be better than the highest ranking member by just giving a compliment to someone t make their day go better. What you and I can do to help step this raging power struggle is to be an example to the attackers and victims. You can make a difference by rejecting any and all misuse of power which attemp to negate the human worth of others. Ways to do this are to v nteer to be apart of communities that strongly disagree with a.l.l misuse of power. When you are In a situation where you see this power being misused, say you disagree with it and think it is inhuman and needs to be dealt with in different a Way.
