They <br />occur because we are afraid to accept differences, do not com- <br />municate, see differences we are unwilling to accept, have social <br />structures that support them, habits. which reinforce them, <br />parental 'Influence and teach.ing which continue them and abusive <br />power which permits them, <br />Some solutions are 5� <br />N O COMM NI ATIO1 INABILITY To AdEPT DIFFERENCES, FEAR <br />I think I can help solve these by setting gn example for those <br />around me and learning about others in such a gray that people k now <br />what I am doin.g <br />A POWER <br />I think. I can solve the .abusive power problem by making it harder <br />to do in my presence. I can do this by making it clear I do not <br />tolerate that b ehavior and making sure appropriate steps are <br />taken to divide the power among several individuals. <br />SOCIAL STRUCTURES THAT SUPPORT HATE CRIMES <br />I think I can help remedy these by recognizing discriminating set -ups, <br />po�ntin.g thew out to the appropriate people and making sure. those <br />people follow through. School is an example: if there are school <br />elections, popularity used in economic power becomes a major issue. <br />P AR E NTAL INFLUENCE AND HABITS <br />To help solve these problems I can become actively involved in <br />others' lives either by choice of profession or by participating <br />in services for needy children. <br />In conclusion, hate crimes are a very tricky problem, They are <br />not like a one. lame street or a calculation problem.
