I believed the world was just like <br />Sesame Street; people treated each other in a friendly, considerate way and were happy to meet <br />and talk to others. I was living in a fairytale world. As I becarne older and went to school, <br />learned about racism and stereotyping. Even then, I thought those wicked things were far away. <br />I was in a protective bubble; discrimination and prejudice only happened somewhere else, to <br />people I didn't know. <br />On August 2, 2005, any safety bubble popped. A few blocks fern nay house, a man's <br />car was vandalized. For three days, notes containing racist remarks about his appearance and <br />ethnicity were put on his front door. Community leaders spoke in f avor of actions that never had <br />seemed necessary before. All of us were shaken; hoer could such shameful acts have occurred in <br />a friendly little city like Falcon eights` <br />Stereotyping and racial discrimination are important national. issues. A few months ago, <br />New "fork City police began to search passengers on the subway. Officials said the searches <br />were necessary to prevent a terrorist attack. Some people said the police should be extra careful <br />with riders who look like they cone from the fiddle East. Is it a good idea to focus on a single. <br />group that is seen as the main demographic for terrorists, or is it racial profilin g A man who is <br />searched on his way to work in New York just because of his appearance will feel as threatened <br />and unwelcome as my neighbor did in Falcon heights. We would be better off if we <br />concentrated on suspicious behavior, instead of skin color or the clothes someone gears. <br />The Bill of Rights protects individual liberties against unfair government action. For <br />example, the Fourth Amendment prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures. It should p rcvent <br />the New York City police from searching or arresting subway riders because of their physical <br />
