Honorable Mention
Julia Jacobson
8' Grade
t ar view ft
Ms. Black
Immigration is an emotional topic where discussion can turn hostile
q uickly. We need to sort out the. positives and negatives of immigration to agree
on a plan for making ing im igrati in America better for e veryone, including
immigrants, employers o f immigrants, and U.S. citizens. People need to
encourage immigration, but prevent immigration that hurts America. To cove to a
decision on what laws America needs, I've explored contributions of immigrants,
mistreatment of immigrants, and problems that immigrants can cause in America.
The United States needs government policies that are effective and enforceable
to make a im igration good for everyone.
Overall, most immigrants have improved the United States. For hundreds
of years, immigrants have been contributing and successful members of our
country. Some a am-ples of successful immigrants would be the British immigrant
Alexander Gram Bell, inventor of the telephone, Russian immigrant Irving Berlin,
a writer and Norwegian egian immigrant Rosika Schwimmer an advocate of women's
rights. Immigrants have taken unpopular jobs that have stimulated America's
economy like being in the army, and working in laund mats, cleaning services,
construction services, or becoming ing farm laborers. Immigrants have also believed
in ideas. that our country firmly support today like anti' slavery. Without the
support: of immigrants, Abraham Lincoln, one of our greatest presidents, would
have never been elected immigrants. were the majority of his votes. Immigrants
also rake the United. States a more interesting and diverse country.
1
