Many residents have alarm systems, and we want them to
keep them turned on when appropriate! In fact, I would believe we would want to encourage
it!
If we are only going to have two free alarm calls per 12 month period, the written material
should say two rather than "multiple." Personally, most individuals may have an easier time
keeping track of false alarms on a "calendar year" basis rather than a "12 month period."
The fee schedule looks quite harsh given the number of seniors on fixed incomes and those
with alarm systems, systems that are not always predictable. I know of one recent event
where the power was lost and came on in the middle of the night, turning the alarm on in full
alert. The resident had taken our his hearing aids and could not hear the alarm. The police
arrival found a "false alarm" but the reasoning seems not to fit in this case -or many others
I have seen occur in my neighborhood over the years.
If there is a problem with our "software" in keeping proper track of things, say commercial
versus residential or calendar year versus 12 month period, our excellent IT department can
undoubtedly make the necessary changes. It is the case that software is to serve the user,
not enslave him.
If there is a problem with commercial false alarms, then penalize the commercial
establishments. Please do not penalize residents from accidental mistakes while trying to
protect themselves. The alarm systems are a much more appropriate method of protection than
buying guns.
1
