News clippings from Jordan Creek Mall
New West Des Moines mall billed as the state's largest
by DanNin Danielson Aug. 2004
A new shopping center billed as "lowa's largest mall" is set to open Wednesday in West Des Moines. Julie
Jacoby, the spokesperson for mall developer General Growth Properties, says the planning and
construction at the 200 acre site called the Jordan Creek Town Center has taken six years. She says
there's finro-million square feet and they'll open with 126 stores, with a potential for 150 stores. Jacoby
says they expect to be a tourist draw. She says the primary market area is a 50-mile radius, but they
expect to draw people from across the state too. Jacoby says Jordan Creek's new stores will be one aF the
things that'il spur people to drive across the state. She says there are 60 retailers that're new to the Des
Moines market, and 38 aF those are new to the state. She says the restaurants are expected to be a big
draw too, saying they have "the most enticing restaurant lineup you could find in any metro area in the
country." The mall has not been without controversy, spawning a lawsuit over tax breaks given by the city
aF West Des Moines. And some say it will have a negative impact on existing malls and businesses.
Jacoby says Jordan Creek will help other businesses by drawing in shoppers from across the state. She
says they've addressed the issue over the years and says the additional business they'll draw into the area
is a win-win situation. She says some retailers are actually expanding into the new mall while keeping their
other stores open. Jacoby says the mall is expected to draw 12-million people a year. Jacoby says 106 of
the 126 stores will open Wednesday -- with the rest to open by Christmas.
Jordan Creek developer unveils more amenities
By T1M HIGGINS
Register StafF Writer
02/1912003
Trickling waterfalls, illuminated fountains and a fireplace in the food court were among the details Jordan
Creek Town Center's developer released Tuesday about the proposed $200 million mall project.
Tuesday night, Chicago-based General Growth presented new design plans for what's eected to be
lowa's largest shopping center to the West Des Moines City Council.
"While construction crews were quiet through the cold winter months, architects have been working
overtime on the finishing details aF Jordan Creek Town Center," said General Growth spokeswoman Julie
Jacoby.
The project broke ground last September, and construction crews are expected to be active this spring.
The mall is scheduled to be completed by Aug. 4,2004.
General Growth still will identify only a few of the mall's expected 125 occupants, such as Dillard's, Pottery
Bam and P.F. Chang's China Bistro.
Jordan Creek officials say the development includes a 3.5-acre lake, hotel and amphitheater.
The new designs show the project's lake in greater detail, including many waterfalls and fountains, which
could be illuminated at night. Six restaurantswould cluster around the lake's west end along an outdoor
boardwalk that abuts the water. A footbridge would allow people to travel from the boardwalk to the indoor
mall.
Even though the council approved the mall's construction last spring, West Des Moines city planning
officials must approve new details.
FiF!#4J ' i 2}4 Page 18 of 20
