Roseville Human Rights Commission
Minutes September 14, 2010
Chair Singleton requested that the Commission continue with Item 3c Data Geeks Report.
Commissioners reviewed the findings about Roseville Area Schools (RAS). The data showed
that RAS are becoming more ethnically diverse. It showed that in all grades students liked school
and felt there was a teacher who was interested and cared about them. It showed areas of concern
including students not feeling safe at school and in the restrooms. The data showed that many
students reported being made fun of because of race or background.
Commissioners asked what the background data referred to whether it meant sexual
orientation, economic status, obesity or other factors. Commissioner Kennedy said that students
interpreted it however they wanted. She noted that there were questions about bullying which she
did not include in this report.
Commissioner Kennedy said the 2010 data would be available later this year.
7. Announcements
Curti pointed out the Minnesota Department of Human Rights annual conference is December 3.
She was waiting confirmation that commission members of League cities could attend at no cost.
Commissioner Yates and Commissioner Marie Oftelie noted that neither would be at the October
meeting.
Commissioner McKenzie reminded others of the Robbinsdale Human Rights event on
September 28, in which Sabina Zimering, author of the book Hiding in the Open will speak
about her experience hiding from the Nazis during the Holocaust.
8. Adjournment
Commissioner Kennedy moved and Commissioner Yates seconded motion to adjourn. Motion
prevailed unanimously.
