comparison with MPCA standards, with Lake Bennett the only impaired lake based on State
standards; inclusion of Barr's 2007/08 study; impacts of draughts; and the Ramsey County
Public Works Department as the source of much of the data.
Further discussion included reviewing and possibly including broader mean data for a longer
period of time (e.g. 1985 or 1990) for comparison; the need to make the graphs understandable
for the general public rather than scientists, as suggested by Terry Noonan; and including State
standards for a reference point.
Mr. Petersen noted that individual Board members were involved in numerous community
projects related to storm water management and water quality issues that could be included in
annual reports in the future, such as Shoreview Green Communities and cost -share projects for
rain gardens that would enhance the Boards Education and Outreach components.
It was the consensus of the Board that individual members should provide to Chair Ferrington,
within the next two (2) weeks, some of their Education/Outreach activities that the Chair would
review for posting on the GLWOM website to make the public aware of the work of the Board.
Chair Ferrington suggested several Strategic Planning Workshops would be useful in the future
to compile various activities and to provide background and context for the new Board members.
NEW BUSINESS:
Internship Opportunities with ESPM Students (U of MN)
Chair Ferrington briefly advised Board members of his work with Environmental Policy and
Management students at the University, and potential availability to the GLWMO of paid and /or
volunteer internship positions for specific projects. Internships are a requirement of students
majoring in those fields. Chair Ferrington suggested that individual Members think about
opportunities and initiatives that would benefit the efforts of the Board. A brief example of an
internship description could be drafted by Chair Ferrington for review by the Board members.
The description needs to define tangible outcomes for a volunteer internship.
Discussion included timing for beginning an internship (April of 2011), with descriptive
documents needed by October of 2010, to allow interns to make application to the GLWMO;
Chair Ferrington agreed to send Board members examples of the educational requirements; skills
of students; and the potential for several internships based on individual member initiatives.
Chair Ferrington was asked to provide additional information and templates to individual
members via e -mail.
Specific interest for possible internships included in environmental education/outreach for
citizens; and monitoring and assessment of storm sewers for total suspended solids.
Adjourn
Chair Ferrington adjourned the meeting at approximately 7:50 p.m.
16
