2) KATHY FISCHER
1161 Laurie Road West E-mail: kathyfischer2010®hotmail.corn
Cover Letter: Attached is my application for the Civic Engagement Task
Force. Between the AL VA program and my current class on Policy at Bethel, I
am inspired to translate what I am learning into action. When I moved to
Roseville 4 years ago I was traveling extensively on business, as a result, I
have not been involved in our community and unfortunately really do not know
my neighbors -yet. I want to change that and I also want to make a
difference in the world- hence my voluntary career change. This task force is
especially timely for me. I hope you, and the Human Rights Commission, will
agree that I have a lot to offer./
Why are you interested in serving on a city Task Force exploring civic
engagement in Roseville?
As a baby boomer, I believe that our aging population will either be our biggest
problem or our biggest asset. To ensure it is an asset I believe the answer lies in
civic engagement. We need to recognize the seniors as one of our most valuable
resources. We can do that by engaging seniors as mentors for young people and
support for their peers. By building civic engagement in our families we ensure
the strength of our community now and for the future. It has been my
experience that most people do care and are willing to help, but often don't
know what to do or how to do it. I hope this task force can provide those
opportunities.
Why Roseville? My fiancé and I moved to Roseville 4 years ago, with every
intention to `age in place'. I also work in Roseville. For both of those reasons I
have a vested interest in the future of our city. I'm ready to dive in!
Describe your current and past experience in civic engagement issues and
efforts, including but not limited to your community involvement in Roseville.
I am currently enrolled in the Vital Aging Network's Leadership Development
Program which is a program for 50+ adults who are interested in providing
leadership for the common good. As part of that program, my personal project
will be to conduct interviews with seniors and their families about the barriers to
conversations regarding planning for aging.
Many years ago I began coordinating efforts at work to raise money and purchase
Christmas gifts for families in need. The biggest take-away from that experience
was that most people are willing to help others, but often do not know what to
do or how to do it.
Program Planning Committee Report to the May 10. 2011, Roseville Human Rights Commission.. 7 _
Meeting
