• I am a proud Roseville resident, and I have been searching for ways to
become more involved as a citizen. I believe that citizenship in a democratic
culture requires active participation in public deliberation practices (rather
than, for instance, simple observation of"what's happening" in a particular
decision-making body). I moved to Roseville in 2006; I would like my
Minnesota roots to flourish in Roseville through such active engagement.
Put simply: I want to serve on this Task Force simply because I am a
Roseville citizen.
Describe your current and past experience in civic engagement issues and
efforts, including but not limited to your community involvement in Roseville.
• Prior to my employment at Hamline University, I was a professor of
communication studies; I developed and taught upper-level courses on
public policy argument. One course goal was to help students understand
the prin, iples of citizenship in a changing democracy. In other words, part of
the work that I did as a professor was to help students take responsibility for
their own roles as citizens, and to practice civic engagement.
• I am not currently involved in any civic engagement issues and efforts; this
lack of involvement is precisely the reason I'm applying to serve on this Task
Force. I want to "walk the walk" of civic engagement beyond "talking the talk"
of it to students.
Summarize special skills and qualifications you have acquired from
employment or previous community work that may be useful in the Task
Force's work.
• I would bring my passion for learning, my collaborative problem-solving
skills, and my dedication to responsible citizenship to the table. I would also
bring significant writing and editing experience. I understand that one result
of the Task Force will be a written report, and I possess a wealth of talent
and experience in so doing. In addition to being the author of a published
scholarly book (Mommy Queerest: Contemporary Rhetorics of Lesbian
Maternal Identity, 2002, University of Massachusetts Press) and other
works, I was the project editor for the 2006-07 Hamline University Self-Study
for Reaccreditation. My work on that project required collaboration with five
different teams of writers (each team wrote a chapter), and my major task
was to edit the chapters into a cohesive and unified document of more than
200 pages. I am good at seeing the big picture, and in breaking down big-
picture projects into smaller steps. My daily work as Director of the Hamline
University Writing Center will also be useful for collaborating with Task
Force members in critical analysis, group communication, interpersonal
communication, and writing.
• Thank you for considering me. I look forward to hearing from you, and I do
so hope that the Human Rights Commission will appoint me to the volunteer
task force.
Program Planning Committee Report to the May 10. 2011, Roseville Human Rights Commission 16 -
Meeting
