City of Des PIaines Neighborhood Traffic Management Policy <br />TRAFFIC CALMING OBIECTIVES <br />Traffic calming is the combination of mainly physical and educational measures used to alter driver <br />behavior in order to reduce the negative effects of motor vehicle use and thereby improve <br />conditions for non motorized street users. <br />The general objectives of traffic calming measures are to improve the quality of life in <br />neighborhoods and promote alternative modes of transportation by: <br />1. Slowing traffic <br />2. Reducing cut through traffic <br />3. Increasing safety for: <br />a. Pedestrians <br />b. Bicycles <br />c. Vehicles <br />Page 2 of 12 <br />4. Enhancing the aesthetics of neighborhood streets when possible (e.g. landscaping at <br />curb extensions or traffic circles) and at the least not detracting from the aesthetics of <br />the neighborhood <br />
