PUBLIC INQUIRIES/INFORMATIONAL
Mayor Grant noted many people were in attendance. He invited members from the public to
speak.
Nick Tamble, 2800 Laport Drive, Mounds View and Seth Baetzol, 2343 Larpenteur Avenue,
Maplewood. They wanted to speak on an economic impact item. He held an Ice Swim event in
Arden Hills on February 22, 2025. They cut a 25-foot hole in Lake Johanna. The event hosted 100
swimmers, from across the United States and included some international participants. The
economic impact of that day was about $150,000. They planned the event in 14 weeks. Tickets
sold out in 20 days. Ice dipping is a growing activity. Ice swimming is likely to be an Olympic
event in 2030. He is looking ahead to January of 2026 where the economic impact would likely
exceed $1 million. He understands there is funding available for this type of event. He thinks this
would be a good event to pursue those funds for.
Councilmember Holden said the request is pursuing Twin Cities Gateway Funding to advertise
next year's event.
Seth Baetzol gave the history of Ice Swimming. These events started in Europe but they are
beginning to popularize in the United States. The event in Arden Hills this year was scheduled on
the same day as another Ice Swim event in Vermont. The hope is, if the Arden Hills event is held
