• June 11th, 10:00 am — Grand Opening Ceremony. A week -long celebration kick
off begins. Nine days of special events.
REVIEW OF WAYFINDING SIGNAGE /LOOK AND FEEL
Ms. Yungers reported that she and Mr. Yonke have been working with a consultant to
create a draft wayfinding plan for the parks system. The plan consists of three tiers.
The first tier are kiosks at primary entrances and would include a map, park rules, key
features and a "you are here" indicator, the second tier are orientation signs and the
third tier are trail posts with a map and directional symbols (for example, restrooms or
beaches) with arrows.
The Parks Commission reviewed the plan and Mr. Shirley commented that perhaps
orientation signs are not necessary. Kiosks at major parking lots and trail posts
throughout the park should be sufficient. There was general agreement with Mr.
Shirley's suggestion among the Parks Commission members.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mr. Mack reported:
• There was a bill in the house that would have cancelled all capital bond projects
that were not committed. Ramsey County Parks and Recreation projects in the
last bonding bill include the Keller Regional Park picnic shelters, Battle Creek
Regional Park shelter and construction of a trail connection near Grass Lake
from Gramsie Road to County Road F. All will be committed before July 1, 2011.
• Appropriation of legacy funding. The state and Metro Regional Parks each
received 43% of the appropriation in the last biennium. The Governor has
proposed 42% for Metropolitan Regional Parks, 42% for State Parks and 16% for
a statewide regional park grant program. Ramsey County supports the
Governor's recommendation. There is a strong push by rural Minnesota to get a
larger share of the appropriation.
• Operations /maintenance for regional parks. The Governor proposed a 40%
reduction in the General Fund appropriation. The House proposed a 2%
reduction and the Senate proposed a 15% reduction. These reductions will
negatively impact regional park and trail services.
ADJOURNMENT
Upon appropriate motion, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Victoria Dahlquist
3
