Parks,Trails&Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes January 10,2012
Page 3
Ms. Olson indicated she would edit the Powerpoint based on this evening's discussion. She
also indicated she would like the committee members to present the goals/discussion points to
the Council. She asked if they were interested in meeting before the joint work session to
review the Powerpoint and decide on who will present each topic. The committee decided to
meet on Thursday, February 16, at 6:30 pm.
Committee Member Peck asked if the Committee should recommend irrigation for Hazelnut
Park. Ms. Olson indicated the irrigation project was already in the CIP for approximately
$26,000 for both fields. However, she indicated there has been discussion about only irrigating
the soccer field. After some discussion, the committee felt it wanted to emphasize irrigating
both fields.
MOTION: Committee Member Peck motioned that the PTRC suggest to Council that
both the ball field and soccer field be irrigated at Hazelnut Park, seconded by
Chair Garretson. The motion carried unanimously (6-0).
B. Other New Business
None
5. REPORTS
A. City Council Report
None
Public Works/Park and Recreation Report
Ms. Olson praised the Public Works crew for keeping up the ice rinks in order to keep
them open. She indicated most cities have given up on their ice rinks because of the
warm winter.
She mentioned she did send an e-mail on behalf of the PTRC to the Karth Lake
Improvement District Board for a possible dock on Karth Lake and was informed that the
board is split approximately 50/50 on this issue. The Board indicated that the reason they
are discouraged from inviting more fishing is that the lake does not have any outlet or
inlet so it has been fished out in the last couple years. Ms. Olson indicated the Karth
Lake Chair will report back after she brings it back to the Board in April.
Ms. Olson stated the Spring/Summer Recreation Guide would be going out sometime the
first week in March.
Ms. Olson informed that Bethel University was caught utilizing our ice rinks during off
hours. She indicated the City provides 2-3 Bethel student employees' keys so they can
use the rinks for intramurals. These employees sign a contract stating they will not use
their keys after hours for rink/light usage or it could jeopardize Bethel's relationship with
the City. The City issued a warning because of past issues and now once again students
were seen playing broomball after hours at 1:00 am.
