ARDEN HILLS CITY COUNCIL—MAY 29, 2012 4
Park and Recreation Manager Olson explained Ms. Kriegler does not recommend cedar
construction for the frames around the trail signage and has proposed other more durable and
maintenance friendly materials for the sign panels. The design and layout proposed by Ms.
Kriegler for all three options is similar to the PTRC proposal. Staff also discussed the mapping
portion of the design to gauge what Vacker Sign Company would need to export the map to the
sign company. Ms. Kriegler is confident she can work with Staff to utilize the City's trail
mapping.
Park and Recreation Manager Olson commented that due to the mapping requirements and the
positive experience the City has had with Vacker Inc., it was Staff s recommendation that the
signs be designed and produced by Vacker Inc. She then reviewed the sign options along with the
expenses noting the PTRC recommends Option #2 with the City tree engraved on the top of the
sign. Staff recommended the Council contract with Vacker Inc. for the production of 20 trail
signage panels in the amount of$2,885.63 and authorize an additional $500 expenditure for City
Staff to purchase posts ($300) and cement($200).
Councilmember Holden questioned why Staff was recommending 20 trail signs.
Park and Recreation Manager Olson explained this was the number of signs recommended by
the PTRC to stay within the budget and to meet the sign minimum by Vacker Inc. Their design
time is built into the sign cost.
Councilmember Holmes stated Option#3 may be easier to change and update the map.
Park and Recreation Manager Olson commented that each map option had the protective Tuff
Cover over laminate. The only difference was that Option #3 had an aluminum frame
surrounding the sign.
Councilmember Holmes expressed concern with how trail updates would be handled.
Park and Recreation Manager Olson stated it would cost the City $45 to update the trail map.
She did not anticipate the map would be updated frequently.
Mayor Grant questioned how the sign would be mounted to the cedar post.
Park and Recreation Manager Olson indicated the Public Works Department would use two
metal bolts to mount the sign to the cedar post.
Councilmember Holden asked if proposed signs would be included on the trail signs.
Park and Recreation Manager Olson explained the PTRC did not suggest adding proposed
trails to the signage, but this could be further discussed by the Council. The PTRC was concerned
that the sign may become too busy with existing and proposed trails.
Councilmember Holden expressed concern that changes to the sign trail would cost the City
$900 each time the trails map was updated in the future.
