ARDEN HILLS CITY COUNCIL—APRIL 30, 2012 11
expensive options for an amount not to exceed $90,021.29; with park benches,
picnic tables and trash receptacles purchased by the City and installed by
City staff.
DISCUSSION:
Councilmember Tamble was pleased that the Council was taking action to revitalize this City
park.
Councilmember Werner asked if funds were available to fund the park reconstruction in 2012.
Public Works Director Maurer stated the City had sufficient funds to cover the reconstruction
of the park.
Mayor Grant stated Valentine Park would serve the local neighborhoods well and was pleased
the Council was moving forward with the reconstruction. He commented the expense was more
than originally anticipated but would benefit many residents.
Councilmember Werner agreed stating there were a large number of homes surrounding this
park.
Councilmember Holmes commended Public Works Director Maurer and Parks and
Recreation Manager Olson for their work on this project for not only adding new amenities to
the park but for also reengineering the park and correcting the drainage concerns.
The motion carried unanimously (4-0).
B. Discarded City Park Equipment
Public Works Director Maurer stated the old play structure at Valentine Park could be donated
to another governmental or non-profit agency. The League of Minnesota recommended a waiver
of liability be signed by the recipient. The City Attorney would assist the City in drafting the
proper documents. He recommended the City crews take down the play structure and mark it
appropriately.
Mayor Grant explained if staff were to remove the play structure and the City donate the
equipment, it would save the City approximately $750, as the contractor would not have to
complete the task. He commented Calvary .Church in Roseville was interested in the play
equipment. He noted he does attend this church, but did not make the request. He indicated
Pelican Rapids was also interested in the play structure. He questioned how the Council would
like to proceed with this matter.
Councilmember Holmes asked who would be responsible for removing the equipment. Public
Works Director Maurer recommended that City staff remove the play structure as some
components are relatively heavy and would be placed on a trailer for the agency assuming
responsibility for the equipment.
