Parks,Trails&Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes September 25,2012
Page 3
Ms. Olson indicated they are sprayed and then picked but indicated she would discuss
better scheduling of spraying with Public Works Director Maurer.
Ms. Garretson also noted that the benches at Crepeau Nature Preserve are still amongst
overgrown vegetation. She also indicated that there were six separate comments about
the cracks on the trail at Cummings Park. Ms. Olson informed that the cracks were taken
care of the beginning of September as part of the 3-mile crack sealing project.
Council Liaison Holden questioned what was meant by the Cummings Park comment
"plaque notched into seat—very tacky." Ms. Olson indicated Public Works etched the
benches so that the plaques would fit in and be flush with the other wood. Ms. Olson
indicated if it was preferred to just have the plaques screwed on they could do that
instead.
Committee Chair Garretson noted that the south entrance at Cummings is dirty/muddy.
She indicated there were several comments regarding this but she is not sure what they
can do about it. Ms. Olson indicated that she would work with the Public Works crew to
find a solution.Ms. Holden suggested pavers or wood.
Ms. Garretson also stated there were many comments about the picnic shelter roof at
Floral Park having vegetation growing on it and also comments about the trails. Ms.
Olson explained that those trails were the trails they were originally going to work on,
but when the contractor went out to seal them he found some coating on them which
would not allow the Slurry Seal to stick. The contractor indicated the coating would first
need to be removed and the Public Works staff is looking at doing that next year.
Ms. Garretson questioned if they should get rid of all or at least two of the perennial
gardens at Floral Park. Ms. Olson indicated the garden that is by the steps is difficult to
maintain and seems to get more weeds. Ms. Garretson suggested using Preen on the
gardens and feels using that would eliminate a lot of the weeds. Ms. Olson commented it
is difficult to maintain all 30 gardens. Ms. Garretson questioned if they wanted to have
so many gardens. She indicated she will volunteer to clean the ones at Floral Park next
year.
Ms. Garretson also indicated there were comments about the upper area at Freeway Park
needing some aesthetic enhancement and the fence needing to be replaced. Committee
Member O'Malley suggested they add this as an agenda item for another meeting.
Council Liaison Holden commented that there could possibly be some money available
for improvements with the redo of the County Road E bridge.
Committee Member Messerly asked where they planned on putting trees at Freeway.
Ms. Garretson indicated it would be more towards the road. Ms. Olson stated she would
work with the staff tree inspectors to see if this is a good location for planting of trees.
Council Liaison Holden asked if the basketball net at Ingerson was going to be replaced
and the swinging bench repaired. Ms. Olson informed that the swinging bench was
repaired via an Eagle Scout project and that she will check to see about the net.
