New Retail Trade and Service Companies Boosted Start-up Jobs
Several medium-sized retail trade and health service companies set up new operations in
urbanized areas of the northeast region. This doubled the number of start-up jobs created since
the summer quarter. New business formation and expansion by these industries remained
strong, continuing a trend that began in 1992.
Major manufacturing expansions continued to fuel job growth in the area. Several services,
Northwest retail trade, and construction businesses also expanded, albeit at lower rates than during the
summer quarter. Combined with high rates of start-up jobs, the major expansions produced the
Region highest regional performance at new job creation in the state.
4th Quarter, 1995
Number of Business Establishments
Births Dissolutions Expansions Contractions
Industry No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%)
Agriculture D D D D D D 0 0.0
Mining 0 0.0 D D D D 0 0.0
Construction 5 1.3 4 1.0 4 1.0 D D
Manufacturing D D D D 6 2.2 D D
Trans., Comm., Utilities D D 4 1.5 D D 0 0.0
Wholesale Trade D D D D D D D D
Retail Trade 12 1.1 15 1.4 4 0.4 6 0.6
Finance, Ins., Real Estate D D 6 1.7 0 0.0 0 0.0
Services 21 1.6 25 2.0 6 0.5 8 0.6
Public Administration D D 0 0.0 0 0.0 D D
TOTAL 4th Qtr., 1995 49 1.1 60 1.4 25 0.6 20 0.5
TOTAL 3rd Qtr., 1995 80 1.8 42 1.0 32 0.7 29 0.7
TOTAL 4th Qtr., 1994 70 1.6 63 1.4 23 0.5 19 0.4
Number of Jobs
Births Dissolutions Expansions Contractions
Industry No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%)
Agriculture D D D D D D 0 0.0
Mining 0 0.0 D D D D 0 0.0
Construction 3 0.1 5 0.2 65 2.5 D D
Manufacturing D D D D 182 1.5 D D
Trans., Comm., Utilities D D 0 0.0 D D 0 0.0
Wholesale Trade D D D D D D D D
Retail Trade 136 1.3 45 0.4 94 0.9 81 0.8
Finance, Ins., Real Estate D D 12 0.7 0 0.0 0 0.0
Services 224 1.3 50 0.3 88 0.5 287 1.6
Public Administration D D 0 0.0 0 0.0 D D
TOTAL 4th Qtr., 1995 382 0.7 124 0.2 537 1.0 437 0.8
TOTAL 3rd Qtr., 1995 186 0.3 136 0.2 692 1.2 439 0.8
TOTAL 4th Qtr., 1994 267 0.5 141 0.3 691 1.3 289 0.5
D = Suppressed to avoid disclosure of individual company data.
Northtrest Region Counties: Beltranti.
