Construction Was Source for Large Number of Expansion Jobs
During the summer and fall quarters, construction was an important source of expansion jobs
in the West Central region. Building and special trade contractors expanded during the 1995
construction season, while highway and heavy construction slowed down.
• Overall, new business formation and job creation declined sharply in the West Central region
during this quarter. The large service sector had fewer new businesses and new jobs; while
business dissolutions increased sharply. Retail trade showed a slight increase in start-up jobs
from a smaller number of new companies.
