Business Expansion Sustained Job Growth in Northeast Region
New business formation fell sharply in the northeast region, adversely affecting new job
creation in all major sectors of the local economy. Consistent with DES reports of
manufacturing net job losses during October and November in the Duluth-Superior area, the •
BTS found large job losses from manufacturing business dissolutions during this quarter
(Department of Economic Security, Monthly Labor Market Review, October, November, and
December Issues, 1995).
Northeast Major expansions provided numerous new jobs to offset losses from business downsizing and
Region_ closures. In particular, services and retail trade picked up with the fall tourist season, which
sustained the previous quarter's net job growth.
4th Quarter, 1995
Number of Business Establishments
Births Dissolutions Expansions Contractions
Industry No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%)
Agriculture 0 0.0 D D 0 0.0 D D
Mining D D D D D D D D
Construction 20 2.5 12 1.5 7 0.9 D D
Manufacturing 10 2.0 10 2.0 D D D D
Trans., Comm., Utilities D D D D 5 1.1 5 1.1
Wholesale Trade D D D D D D 0 0.0
Retail Trade 36 1.6 20 0.9 8 0.4 10 0.4
Finance, Ins., Real Estate D D 7 1.0 D D D D
Services 37 1.3 37 1.3 24 0.8 13 0.5
Public Administration 0 0.0 0 0.0 D D 0 0.0
TOTAL 4th Qtr., 1995 130 1.5 103 1.2 52 0.6 38 0.5 •
TOTAL 3rd Qtr., 1995 202 2.4 100 1.2 53 0.6 40 0.5
TOTAL 4th Qtr., 1994 139 1.6 124 1.4 43 0.5 47 0.5
Number of Jobs
Births Dissolutions Expansions Contractions
Industry No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%) No. Rate(%)
Agriculture 0 0.0 D D 0 0.0 D D
Mining D D D D D D D D
Construction 27 0.5 9 0.2 198 3.7 D D
Manufacturing 48 0.4 139 1.1 D D D D
Trans., Comm., Utilities D D D D 179 3.1 116 2.0
Wholesale Trade D D D D D D 0 0.0
Retail Trade 210 0.8 73 0.3 153 0.6 198 0.7
Finance, Ins., Real Estate D D 31 0.7 D D D D
Services 78 0.2 49 0.1 482 1.1 256 0.6
Public Administration 0 0.0 0 0.0 D D 0 0.0
TOTAL 4th Qtr., 1995 419 0.4 351 0.3 1,152 1.0 783 0.7
TOTAL 3rd Qtr., 1995 757 0.7 255 0.2 1,049 0.9 839 0.7
TOTAL 4th Qtr., 1994 1,225 1.1 349 0.3 759 0.7 1,002 0.9
D = Suppressed to avoid disclosure of individual companv data.
Northeast Region Counties: Aitkin.
