Manufacturing and Service Businesses More than Doubled
Major Expansion Jobs
Food products and other nondurable goods manufacturing in this region expanded beyond their
• seasonal highs of the previous summer. This growth more than compensated for the slowdown
in new and expansion hirings among technology-intensive and durable goods manufacturers in
the region.
Major expansions in the service industry more than doubled the number of new jobs created
by the industry during the previous quarter, with health and business services showing strong Southeast
growth. This region had the highest rate of expansion job creation, and tied with the Northeast ' '
region for the lowest rate of job losses from business dissolutions and contractions.
Consequently, the Southeast region was this quarter's top performer for new job creation and 3rd Quarter, 199-5
retention.
