The City of Arden Hills is hoping that the City of New Brighton will be able to
® help with the traffic problem at GBD, by helping improve Highway 96 and
putting in a bridge. This in turn would help the City of New Brighton with their
plan for improvements of the NW Quadrant.
4. OVERVIEW OF THE NW CORNER OF INTERSTATES 694 AND 35 W
(NEW BRIGHTON)
New Brighton
The City of New Brighton is also working on refining their plan for NW corner of
Interstates 694 and 35W(Exhibit A). The area is currently zoned for Light
Industrial area. The goal of the plan is to blend the new uses in this quadrant into
the existing adjacent land uses along the Old Highway 8 Corridor. The plan
provides for retail, and potentially could include four restaurants. The
development will attempt to manage traffic by utilizing the various interchanges
in the general area. The presence of the rail spur is also an issue with New
Brighton, the rail spur is still used by several existing businesses. The current
long term goal would include the removal of the rail spur. The Cities should
review the potential re-use for the bridge currently used by the rail spur.
5. DISCUSSION
• Highway 96
The Cities need to make the improvement of Highway 96 and its bridge a high
priority for funding. The Cities should continue to work together on becoming a
higher priority for funding and timing of the improvements to assist in the
development of both quadrants.
I-35W Corridor Cities/Joint Marketing
The Cities along the I-35W corridor(Arden Hills, Mounds View,New Brighton,
Roseville, and Shoreview) have been meeting to discuss issues which the Cities
share due their proximity and interrelatedness. The issues of access to Interstate
35W and the production of a joint marketing effort has been a focal point of this
coalition.
The Cities need to provide updates to their respective EDC's as to the activities of
the coalition. The coalition may wish to use representatives of the various EDC's
in the production of the joint marketing effort. The City Staff's will be attempting
to formalize this coalition in May, by having the respective City Council's
endorse a resolution supporting the coalition.
In the short term, the Staffs should keep working together on issues on mutual
concern. It was agreed to share minutes from the proceedings of the two EDC's.
•
