CONSENT ITEM MEMORANDUM DATE: April 8, 2013 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers Patrick Klaers, City Administrator FROM: Sue Iverson, Director of Finance and Administrative Services Amy Dietl, Deputy Clerk SUBJECT: Motion to Approve Hiring Seasonal Maintenance Workers and Engineering Intern Requested Action Motion to approve hiring seven Seasonal Maintenance Workers and one Engineering Intern. Background Each year, the City seeks Seasonal Public Works Maintenance Workers to assist with the maintenance of City streets, water, sewer, and parks. Eighteen applications were received for the seasonal positions. Twelve applicants were interviewed by the Director of Finance and Administrative Services, the Public Works Director, the Public Works Superintendent, and a Public Works Maintenance Worker; with seven individuals identified to move forward in the hiring process. Background and reference checks are currently being completed. In addition, a former Engineering Intern/Seasonal Maintenance Worker has been selected to return as an Engineering Intern. This position will be paid out of the Engineering budget, which is an internal service fund that is charged back to other departments and/or projects. It is anticipated that this individual would provide valuable assistance due to the workload and road construction projects in the City this summer (this individual has completed his Engineering degree and has interned with MnDOT). Staff Recommendation Staff recommends appointing Brett Burckhardt, Andrew Evans, Chad Goertzen, Nicholas Jensen, Jared Nydahl, Blake Ryan, and Austin Wikstrom to the position of Seasonal Maintenance Worker and Josh Hauswirth to the position of Engineering Intern; all of which are contingent upon successful background and reference checks. 11 Page of
